End of Year Celebration for Refugee Student Engagement and Support Program

13-Feb-2017

Students, teachers, parents and youth mentors from Victoria University attended this annual event to celebrate the achievements of all the young people in the program.

Each year, thanks to the generous support from our major funding partners - Gandel Philanthropy and The William Buckland Foundation -  VICSEG provides individual mentoring support and student scholarships for up to 60 young people from 10 secondary schools across Melton and Wyndham.

Last year each school group worked together on community service projects that introduced them to important social issues. They raised funds for the Cancer Council and to support people experiencing homelessness. Groups of students from several schools also participated in leadership skills training, whilst others received coaching in how to resolve conflict within their personal relationships, school and community settings.

An impressive project undertaken by a group of newly arrived young people from the Western English Language School included the development and publication a picture book about their personal experience of coming to Australia as refugees, which was launched at the end of year celebration.

The picture book also became part of an exhibition at New Futures Creative in December 2016
