CMY Outstanding Secondary Student Award - John Mathet

John Mathet receives Runner-Up Outstanding Secondary Student Award

CMY My Education Awards, 2019

John Mathet arrived alone in Australia from South Sudan. He is a Year 11 student at Manor Lakes Secondary College and participates in VICSEG New Futures' Student Engagement Program. Gaurab Gurung is a Volunteer Mentor with VICSEG New Futures and is supporting students in the program.
Gaurab discovered that John is a naturally talented artist and has a passion in painting and illustration.  John runs after school art classes for students at community
centers and at his own school, volunteering his time to teach them drawing and painting techniques. He does this all without any financial support or incentives. Gaurab learnt that the Centre for Multicultural Youth runs annual ‘My Education Awards’ and he decided to nominate John.  The awards ceremony was held on 17th of September.
The CMY Education Awards recognise excellence and showcase the outstanding contributions made by students and schools to the success of the learning of primary and secondary students from migrant and refugee backgrounds in Victoria.

John was nominated for the ‘Student Award’ which is awarded to individual students who have achieved significant improvements in their own learning outcomes and have made a positive contribution to others through participation and leadership in an out-of-school-hours learning and support programs.

John was shortlisted and received the ‘Runner-Up Outstanding Secondary Student Award’ in the CMY My Education Awards, 2019

“Being a mentor, I actively collect a massive amount of resources to share with the students in mentoring sessions every week.
This is how I discovered about the CMY Awards for Multicultural Youth and I nominated John with the help of his school teacher.

It has become a wonderful journey for me, as well being in a student placement with VICSEG New Futures
and John's Award Ceremony as well.  I am very thankful to the opportunity given”.
