Follow Basic Food Safety Practices

This course gives you the skills and knowledge required to comply with personal hygiene, maintain food safety, contribute to the cleanliness of food handling areas and dispose of food.

Who is this course for?

Any worker, volunteer, or member of the public who needs to apply food safety practices in health & community service industries, such as child care, aged care, and hospitals.


Are there any preconditions for attending this course?

  • No prior knowledge is required but students need sufficient language and literacy skills; ACSF level 3 or above is recommended
  • Minimum age 18
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI) number.

What is covered in this course?

The course includes:

  • Food safety legislation & standards
  • Personal hygiene procedures
  • Workplace food safety programs
  • Food storage, use and disposal
  • Prevention of contamination, hazards and pests in food premises
  • Reporting and corrective actions


      How long is the course?

      The course is one full-day session delivered Face-to-Face with a trainer.

      Class time is 9:30am to 2:30pm.


      How will I be assessed? 

      Knowledge Assessment:

      • Students complete a written workbook with multiple choice or short answer questions.


      Practical Skills Assessment:

      Students will need to demonstrate:

      • Correct handwashing according to food safety requirements.
      • Following workplace procedures to clean and tidy kitchen environments, including the disposal of food items.


      How long is my Food Safety Certificate valid?

      Your HLTFSE001 Food Safety Statement of Attainment does not include an expiry date. Workplaces may require renewal after 3 – 5 years.
